Why LEED?

Home / News / Why LEED?

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is considered the world’s most widely used green building certification system. It is developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and provides a framework for designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining environmentally sustainable buildings.

LEED certification is based on a point system where projects earn points for meeting specific green building criteria. The certification process involves meeting certain prerequisites and accumulating a specified number of points within various credit categories. The categories include Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Innovation in Design.

There isn’t a specific credit or criteria directly related to locks in LEED. However, certain aspects of security and access control may indirectly impact a project’s LEED certification. For instance, considerations related to door hardware, access control systems, and building security may play a role in meeting certain LEED prerequisites or credits. Here are some aspects to consider:

  1. Sustainable Sites (SS) Category:
  1. Site Selection: Choosing a site that minimizes the environmental impact and promotes sustainable development may contribute to LEED certification.
  1. Materials and Resources (MR) Category:
  1. Building Life-Cycle Impact Reduction: Some LEED credits focus on reducing the environmental impact of the building over its life cycle. Selecting durable and long-lasting materials, including door hardware, may contribute to this.
  1. Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Category:
  1. Security and Access Control: Ensuring the safety and security of building occupants is crucial. Access control systems, including locks, may contribute to indoor environmental quality and occupant well-being.

While LEED does not have specific criteria for locks, it is important to integrate sustainable and environmentally responsible practices throughout the building design and construction process. Additionally, if your project involves access control systems or other security features, you may need to consider these in the context of overall project sustainability.

We offer customized products for our customer who need to meet LEED requirements.  For instance, lead-free version mortise lock case is the product developed specially for the LEED projects.
